ZACAPA XO LUXURY RUM PARTNERS WITH AGNES STUDIO ON A UNIQUE CENTERPIECE WOVEN BY GUATEMALAN WOMEN’S COLLECTIVE
Zacapa XO has partnered with Guatemalan artist duo AGNES STUDIO to create a unique petate centerpiece that evokes the mountainous Guatemalan landscape where both the designers and rum originate. AGNES STUDIO, well known for their craft-centric designs that unite the past and the future, worked closely with the women’s weaving collective that creates petate bands for Zacapa bottles on a bespoke piece that highlights the bold, artistic aspects of Zacapa XO and their shared Guatemalan roots.
The handwoven petate bands, which adorn Zacapa bottles, are a 3,000 year old Mayan cultural tradition continued on by descendants of the ancient Guatemalan civilization. Zacapa, led by master blender Lorena Vásquez, is committed to empowering women in their local communities. Currently there are 700 female weavers who contribute this long-established Guatemalan craft to the Zacapa bottles.
AGNES STUDIO worked with the weavers directly to create this display; visiting their workspace to immerse themselves in the craft, and fully understand the capabilities of the collective. From there, AGNES created a design that would showcase the talent of the weavers. The two groups brought this beautiful piece to life by merging this ancient tradition with Agnes Studio’s unique perspective of historical modernism. Additionally, the petate weavers constructed individual bottle ‘skirts’, to be used to carry a bottle of Zacapa XO that will be revealed early next year, continuing this partnership into the future.
